British Values

Learning these values will underpin what it is to be a British citizen in a modern and diverse Britain and promotes moral and cultural understanding within our children to celebrate the diversity of the UK.

Democracy

Pupils, parents and staff have the right to have their voices heard through our pupil elected council where class representatives raise issues and suggest ideas for improvement. Through Parent Days where parents can come and speak with teachers. Through staff supervision and our open-door policy to the Senior Leadership Team for staff, children and parents.

The Rule Of Law

The importance of laws, whether they are those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently and fairly applied and enforced throughout the school day and through school assemblies and encourage good behaviour. Children are taught our school values through our tutor programme and across the whole curriculum. Children understand why we have laws, that they are there to help us and keep us safe, the consequences when laws are broken and the importance of reparation. Our Home School Agreement also ensures that parents and carers of our children re-enforce our expectations of parents and children, children’s classroom behaviour and out of class conduct, both parents/carers and children sign this document in agreement. Further details are also contained within our Parent/Carer Guide where Parents and Carers are able to familiarise themselves with our Behaviour and School Learning Rules to assist us in promoting these areas within our community.

Individual Liberty 

Within school, children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for our children to enjoy activities even those that involve risk, to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms in a safe manner, for example through our ICT (incorporating E-Safety) and PSHE lessons, through friendship decisions and through extra-curricular preferences and a wide range of outdoor/offsite learning experiences. Children are actively encouraged to express views and opinions in lessons in a formative and appropriate manner. Marking and feedback and homework are set with clear boundaries, which are explained clearly to children and staff.  We teach our children to take responsibility for their behaviour and the impact that this can have on others and to develop their ability to work independently.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance

The ethos of the Libra School revolves around core values such as ‘respect’ and ‘tolerance’, and children take part in discussions in assemblies related to what this means and how it is shown. All members of the school community are expected and supported to show each other respect. Respect is reiterated through our School Learning Rules (the Rules are also forwarded to Parents/Carers for them to assist us in promoting this guidance). Through our curriculum we support children to understand empathy and appreciate the great diversity we have in Britain today and to show tolerance for people from different cultures with beliefs and values different to their own.
