Speech and Language

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE SKILLS ARE CRUCIAL TO THE OVERALL DEVELOPMENT OF A CHILD

Speech and Language intervention, including social skills understanding, enables access to the curriculum as a whole and promotes social inclusion all of which reduces challenging behaviours. This intervention gives children the following opportunities:

  • to improve their ability to communicate their needs, thoughts and feelings effectively, both verbally and non-verbally, using appropriate communication systems and though vocabulary development
  • to develop their social skills which can support them in forming friendships and which are invaluable in ensuring that they can interact in socially appropriate ways both as children and as adults
  • to be supported to develop strategies to manage their difficulties at home or at school, for example being assertive, asking for help when required and using strategies to help with recalling information
  • to build their confidence and self-esteem
  • to be supported in their emotional development through learning a wide range of emotions and how these emotions can be expressed, recognised and managed, and later, relating this to an understanding of empathy.
  • to have their Speech, Language and Communication needs understood and met through staff training delivered by the Speech and Language Therapist
