Independence and Life Skills

THE HEAD, THE HEART AND THE BODY

Independent living and life skills is about giving our children the skills they need to have greater choice, control and autonomy over their life in the future – where they live, who they live with, and how they live, and being able to direct and/or manage their care if necessary. It is about developing young people to feel empowered and have high self-esteem to expect a better quality of life. Achieving these goals is as much about developing a state of mind as a set of skills, having the confidence to try new things, to be assertive and to communicate needs, views and wishes effectively. The learning process is active and often challenging. Developing these skills is about creating a culture of learning in a safe and supported environment with good resourcing.

There is growing evidence that these life skills are associated with a range of positive outcomes at school and later in life. Non-academic skills in childhood, including self-control, self-perceptions and social skills, are strong predictors of adult outcomes, including employment, well-being, and physical and mental health.

At Libra we take a whole-school approach to engendering independence and life skills in our children. These skills are embedded in the day to day curriculum and for older children through specific programmes such as:

  • ASDAN qualifications
  • Human Development programme which includes the Real Baby
  • Independent and Life Skills Assessment programme

Through our curriculum we develop these skills as well as confidence, resilience and the ability to work with others. Our outdoor learning programme including Forest School, education trips and visits and outdoor physical adventures also effectively promote the development of these skills. Developing these skills is embedded in the school ethos, assemblies, lessons, council and in staff-child and staff-parent relationships. The consistency of message and the curriculum environment we provide is crucial for embedding independence and life skills.

We focus on developing three core elements within each child – the head, heart and body, and it’s important for all three to be in balance. The head is the academic aspect of school life, the heart focuses on emotional wellbeing and self-reflection, the body is about physical wellbeing.  We nurture these three elements throughout our curriculum but with a real focus in our tutor time which is twice daily in very small groups. During these times the whole child is supported through a strong assemblies programme that focuses on ‘the world and my place in the world’ introducing knowledge that our children need to be educated citizens, introducing them to the best that has been thought and said and helping to engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement’ through a Growth Mindset.
