School Adults – Therapists

SUPPORTING STAFF WELL-BEING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

All adults in school are trained to enable them to have a good understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of the relational approach and what this approach means in practical terms in school. All school adults are trained to understand how they need to be in their relationships with children and why. They are trained and supported to read children’s behaviour in terms of their relational needs and understand the needs of children who have attachment needs or who have experienced trauma. There are regular opportunities for continued professional development.

We try to ensure in all appropriate meetings that we have space and time for regular professional dialogue about the approach. Respectful relationships within school where all adults are valued is key to a strong relational approach but we also have systems and processes which ensure that school adults are heard and that they are able to affect change. Ensuring that all adults are equal partners also helps us to bring about responsibility rather than accountability. All adults in school are encouraged to make a valuable contribution to provision and to have ownership of their work through opportunities to share and develop ideas and good practice. We find peer mentoring is helpful to share ideas and problem solve and line management supervision is additionally supportive in enabling development both at a personal and organisational level.

SMT are aware of the ‘secondary stress’ symptoms that can impact on school adults who are working with children who have experienced trauma and loss and we have supervision opportunities for school adults to understand and manage intense feelings and projections that can lead to ‘blocked care’ and empathy fatigue. Libra has signed up to the DoE Staff Wellness Charter and we strive to ensure we continue to meet these guidelines to support our school adults.

LIBRA THERAPISTS

PLAY THERAPIST

STACY WARD

Hi my name is Stacy. I am a new member of the therapy team here at Libra. I have recently qualified as a therapeutic play practitioner, and I am currently working towards my PG Diploma in Play Therapy. I have over 12 years experience working at Libra, with 10 of those working within the residential sector.

I enjoy art and crafts, reading and cooking in my spare time – as well as spending time with my kittens Moshy and Benson.

PLAY THERAPIST

EMMA READ

Hi, my name is Emma, and I am the Play Therapist at Libra School.

I am passionate about supporting children and young people to express themselves, build confidence, and develop emotional wellbeing through the power of play. I enjoy creating a safe, nurturing environment where every child feels heard, valued, and supported.

Outside of school, I love going on long walks, spending time away in my caravan, and swimming in the sea. These activities help me relax, recharge, and enjoy the outdoors.

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPIST

JESS CUMING

I have been working as a Speech and Language therapist here at Libra since 2017 after having qualified in 2016 at City University, London with PGDip in Speech and Language Therapy. Prior to acquiring this qualification, I worked with both children and adults with a range of additional needs, mainly autism and learning disabilities. My passion for working in this field stems from the fact that my youngest sister has a diagnosis of autism and severe learning disabilities. As a result of this, I started my working life as a play worker for a charity supporting children with autism and progressed to play leader. I have also worked in both mainstream and SEN schools as a learning support worker. During my time in these roles, I met some amazing families, worked with children with a wide range of needs and learnt a lot, before finally making the decision to train as a Speech and Language Therapist. I also hold levels 1 and 2 of Makaton.

Here at Libra I work with the children either on a 1:1 basis, supporting them with specific Speech and Language needs, or in a group, targeting Social Communication. I also train and advise staff on the best ways in which to support our pupils with their Speech, Language and Communication needs. I thoroughly enjoy my work here as every day is different and I love seeing the progress that the pupils can make with the right input. When I am not working, I love shopping for bargains as well as visiting and exploring new places!
