Pupil Premium

Children eligible to receive this funding are in four groups:

  • Those entitled to free school meals (FSM)
  • Those who have been entitled during the last six years (Ever6)
  • Children in care or looked after (CLA)
  • Services children

The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities in achievement between children eligible for free school meals, in care or whose parents are in the military and their peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.

The level of the premium has increased considerably since 2011. Children in care or looked after RECEIVE additional money.

If children are placed in independent provisions (not mainstream) the Local Authority for that child is not obliged to pass the Pupil Premium funding through to the independent school as they are already paying fees for that placement.

When Libra is in receipt of Pupil Premium through the Personal Education Plan (PEP) the additional funding with approval from the Local Authority can be used in a number of ways:

  • Specialist Software and Interventions to support the 1:1 Support programme for the child.
  • Specialist equipment that might be able to support the child with their learning
  • Opportunities to participate in trips to further promote resilience and independence and to encourage the child to look beyond what they are currently experiencing and aspire to more.

Not every child in care at Libra is in receipt of Pupil Premium funding. In addition the requirements of those who are in receipt of the funding often exceeds the funding and therefore the pupil premium funding is used to part fund the interventions and opportunities identified with Libra funding the remainder. This allows all children within the school to also access these interventions, use the equipment or attend the trips (if appropriate). This ensures equality throughout the school.

Children’s academic attainment and progression is regularly assessed throughout the academic year to monitor the effectiveness of the child’s 1:1 Support and Intervention programme to which the pupil premium can contribute.

Social and emotional development of the child which is as important as academic progress, which can also be supported by the use of Pupil Premium funding to access interventions to develop, confidence, resilience and self-esteem is measured through the Thrive programme.
